With still over four months until Christmas is upon us once again, PricewaterhouseCoopers are already reporting that the majority of high street chains plan on stocking their shelves cautiously, to avoid any potential dips in consumer confidence.
This won’t come as good news to the hundreds of parents who, every year, feel pressured to search, locate and queue for hours, in order to get the most popular Christmas toys for their children.
To help alleviate this, retailers are preparing to launch their Christmas ranges as early as possible, which should also help consumers spread the cost of Christmas over a longer term.
“It’s a case of once bitten twice shy.” said Andy Lyon, Retail Partner at PwC. “Many retailers were caught out in Christmas 2008 and left with goods that they were unable to sell. In 2009, they stocked more conservatively and this paid off with an improvement in profitability and they are expected to take a similar approach this year.”
As many parents will hold back until October 27th, when the Toy Retailers Association announce the Top 10 Christmas Presents, the chance of parents spreading the cost of Christmas continues to decrease.
